HISTORIC NORTH BEACH LOCATION

524 Union Street, home of the legendary Paper Doll, is a San Francisco City Landmark available for lease. This 3,875 sq ft corner space offers restored historic character and fully equipped restaurant infrastructure in the heart of North Beach.

HISTORY

From 1949 to 1961, the Paper Doll operated as a cabaret-style supper club at the intersection of Union Street and Cadell Place. The venue functioned as an intimate gathering space with emphasis on mood, carefully styled interiors, and sophisticated entertainment. Performers included Carmen McRae and Ann Weldon. The club attracted artists, writers, designers, and patrons who valued discretion and aesthetic refinement.

The Paper Doll was significant in San Francisco's mid-century cultural landscape, particularly within LGBTQ history. The club existed during an era when serving alcohol to gay patrons was illegal prior to 1955. Despite this, it operated as an upscale supper club known for its prime rib and fine dining, with reported wait lines around the block.

In 1952, the film noir "The Sniper" was partially filmed inside the club. The space was designated a San Francisco City Landmark in 2019 for its role in LGBTQ history and civil rights.
